He explained, Because most of the cartilage in my knee was gone, the bones were just grinding painfully on each other. One such visitor was Eleanor Bergstein, writer and producer of Dirty Dancing, who vacationed there with her family. The famous lift scene almost didn’t happen in Dirty Dancing as Swayze developed a harsh knee injury back in college, resulting in him leaving the prestigious Eliot Feld Balet Company. Though set at a resort in the Catskills Mountains of Upstate New York, Dirty Dancing was shot entirely in Virginia and North Carolina.The filming came to the Southeast almost by accident. Hundreds of thousands of vacationers made their way to the Catskills to visit the spot. On August 21, 1987, the blockbuster movie Dirty Dancing was released in theaters across the country. Grossinger's heyday was after World War II, according to the Associated Press.
The fire is still under investigation, according to the Liberty Fire Department. The main location is the hotel itself, which is the Mountain Lake Lodge, Pembroke, off I-460 west of Roanoke, Virginia. Once the fire was out, an excavator was brought in to knock down the remaining pieces of the building, officially ridding the Catskills of what remained of the Grossinger Hotel.
